The Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was founded in Palestine around 1154 by St. Berthold (d. about 1195) but it has claimed (without authentic documentation) continuity with hermits settled on Mount Carmel in earlier times, and even to be a direct descendant of Elijah and the "sons of the prophets" (cf. 2 Kgs. 2).
